Tree of Life

Despite the dramatic expansion of the Tree of Life through genome sequencing, a large amount of biodiversity remains to be discovered. This is particularly relevant to microorganisms that are difficult to cultivate, and are usually found in one sample5. A recent study of all known genomes has produced a rough draft version of the Tree of Life, including many archaea and bacteria that are not isolated and whose diversity is poorly understood6.
This expanded Tree of Life is particularly beneficial in assessing the biodiversity of an area, which can help to determine whether specific habitats require special protection. These shared traits are either analogous or homologous. Homologous traits are the same in their evolutionary journey. Analogous traits could appear like they are but they don't share the same origins. Scientists put similar traits into a grouping referred to as a the clade. All organisms in a group have a common characteristic, for example, amniotic egg production. They all came from an ancestor who had these eggs. A phylogenetic tree is constructed by connecting the clades to identify the species who are the closest to one another.
To create a more thorough and accurate phylogenetic tree scientists use molecular data from DNA or RNA to identify the relationships between organisms. This data is more precise than the morphological data and provides evidence of the evolutionary history of an individual or group. The analysis of molecular data can help researchers identify the number of species who share a common ancestor and to estimate their evolutionary age.
The phylogenetic relationships of organisms can be affected by a variety of factors, including phenotypic flexibility, an aspect of behavior that changes in response to unique environmental conditions. This can cause a particular trait to appear more like a species another, obscuring the phylogenetic signal. However, this problem can be solved through the use of methods like cladistics, which include a mix of homologous and analogous features into the tree.
In addition, phylogenetics can aid in predicting the duration and rate of speciation. This information will assist conservation biologists in deciding which species to safeguard from extinction. This model, which encompasses genetic drift, mutations as well as gene flow and sexual selection is mathematically described mathematically.

Traditionally, scientists have studied evolution through studying fossils, comparing species and observing living organisms. Evolution isn't a flims moment; it is a process that continues today. In the past, if an allele - the genetic sequence that determines colour was present in a population of organisms that interbred, it could be more common than other allele. In time, this could mean that the number of moths that have black pigmentation could increase. The same is true for many other characteristics--including morphology and behavior--that vary among populations of organisms.
Observing evolutionary change in action is easier when a species has a rapid generation turnover like bacteria. Since 1988, Richard Lenski, a biologist, has tracked twelve populations of E.coli that descend from one strain. The samples of each population have been collected frequently and more than 500.000 generations of E.coli have passed.
Lenski's work has demonstrated that a mutation can dramatically alter the efficiency with which a population reproduces and, consequently, the rate at which it changes. It also shows that evolution takes time, a fact that is difficult for some to accept.
Another example of microevolution is how mosquito genes that confer resistance to pesticides appear more frequently in areas where insecticides are employed. Pesticides create an enticement that favors those who have resistant genotypes.
The speed at which evolution can take place has led to an increasing recognition of its importance in a world that is shaped by human activity--including climate change, pollution and the loss of habitats which prevent many species from adjusting.
